The Limoneira Company was founded in Ventura County, California in 1893. Its founders were pioneers of spirit and vision that helped lay the foundations of a thriving California citrus industry. Their dedication and innovation in the agricultural industry helped found and develop many institutions that still exist (Sunkist Growers, Fruit Growers Supply and Diamond Walnut).
Today, Limoneira has evolved into a global company whose mission is to preserve and promote its tradition, heritage and legacy in agriculture, community development and land stewardship to maximize value for its shareholders.
With prime agricultural land and operations throughout California, the company has over 7,000 acres in agricultural production of lemons, avocados, oranges, specialty citrus, pistachios, pluots, and cherries. The foresight and innovation of Limoneira's founders remains strong today with Limoneira's continuous commitment to new technology and state of the art farming practices. Limoneira continues to be one of the leaders in agriculture by setting farming standards and providing solid leadership grounded in years of experience.
An integral component of the company’s mission is it’s commitment to community building, and this commitment began with the very inception of Santa Paula, California. The Company has a rich history of working with the community to create neighborhoods and provide housing opportunities, and it supports health care, education, job creation and the many community organizations that help make the region balanced and strong. The latest example of the Company’s community support and involvement is a new master planned community called Santa Paula East Area I.
In 2004, a letter of Cooperation was formed with the City of Santa Paula to jointly master plan this latest community building project in the Company’s history. In order to ensure that this land is developed into neighborhoods that are worthy successors to Limoneira's heritage, the Company has undertaken a comprehensive community involvement, planning and design process. The result of that process is the Draft East Area I Specific Plan, which will guide the development of this new community.
The Limoneira Company recognizes its responsibilities as a corporate leader, and this responsibility is woven into the Company’s mission. Sustainability and stewardship have been part of Limoneira's corporate culture for over 114 years. Sustainability with respect to farming operations include reduced water usage, erosion mitigation efforts, reduced herbicide and pesticide usage. The Company strives to operate at non-peak energy to reduce energy consumption where possible. The Company’s partnership with Agromin, a leader in green waste recycling, helps to transform green waste into safe and cost-effective compost and mulches for use in agricultural production and community projects.
The new Limoneira Company Solar Orchard in partnership with P2 Perpetual Power will produce 1 (one) megawatt of clean energy for powering the Company’s processing plants. The project is designed to meet strict LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards.
Limoneira Company has also entered a partnership with the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California Santa Barbara to incorporate environmentally sound practices into the new Santa Paula East Area I community development. The mission of the Bren School is to play a leading role in researching environmental issues, identifying and solving environmental problems and training research scientists and environmental management professionals.
Sustainability also extends to the Company’s respect for and partnership with its employees. Limoneira knows that its employees are the Company’s greatest asset, and it has developed many company programs to give credence to this philosophy.
In addition to Limoneira's commitment to preserving its heritage and furthering its expertise in agriculture and community building, the company undertakes prudent investments in a variety of areas to strengthen its financial position for future growth.
While in pursuit of its objective to provide high quality products and services, the Company adheres to the highest standards of integrity and fairness in its relationships with employees, customers, shareholders, suppliers and the communities in which it operates.
