Avocados
Limoneira Company is the largest avocado grower in the United States with over 1,500 acres in production. The Hass variety has contributed greatly to the avocado's growing popularity through its retail, restaurant and other food service uses. Over the last 60 years, the company has seen the avocado's transition from a single specialty fruit to an array of 10 variety types ranging from green skin Zutanos to the predominant black skinned Hass. Additionally, growing techniques have changed dramatically. Limoneira focuses on a careful strategy of growing, marketing and sales. Due to differing soil conditions, the care of avocado trees is intensive. The need for more production per acre to compete with foreign supply sources has required Limoneira to take an important lead in the practice of dense planting (four times the trees per acre vs. traditional plantings) and mulching composition to help trees acclimate closer to their more natural climate of the tropics.
