Preheat oven to 350 °F, and prepare three 9-inch round cake pans by lining with waxed paper, then buttering and flouring the pans.
Add the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder and spices to a large bowl and stir together to lend well.
In a second bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy in texture. Add the orange peel and blend.
Add the eggs one at a time as you continue to blend.
In a third bowl, beat the yogourt and milk together.
Add one third of the egg mixture to the flour mixture.
Next, add one third of the milk/yogourt.
Repeat until all the ingredients are well blended.
Divide the batter between the three pans, and bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Allow the cakes to cool completely on a rack before frosting.
